When we left Anchorage after two weeks, we didn’t get far. We boondocked on the Matanuska River in Palmer again so we could catch the Alaska State Fair.
Alaska State Fair
We’d been hearing about the gigantic vegetables that grow in Alaska for some time. They set world records every year. So we wanted to see that first hand at the Alaska State Fair.
Animals
After discovering that almost everything costs extra there, including the demolition derby and the rides, we headed into a giant building to visit the animals. It was certainly a bittersweet visit.
Flowers and produce
And we definitely got to see some gigantic produce along with prize-winning flowers, berries, and more.
Rides and attractions
As we wandered around the fair and the daylight faded away the rides and attractions began lighting up. If you only wanted to do a couple of rides, they were expensive, around $7 per person. So we skipped the rides and just enjoyed looking at them.
Vegan options at the Alaska State Fair
You don’t normally think of state fairs as being vegan-friendly but there were a few options scattered around the Alaska State Fair.
This Thai spot had vegan pad thai and lettuce rolls.
And we also found vegan baked goods.
All in all, we’re glad we were in the right place at the right time to make the Alaska State Fair. It was a first for all of us visiting a fair this large. I’ve only been to county fairs. For many Alaskans, this is the event of the year.
